JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR (萬世巨星) tells the story of the final week of Jesus Christ's life, but from the perspective of the traitor Judas, exploring faith, power, and human contradictions. The story begins with Jesus' entry into Jerusalem, depicting his interactions with his disciples, the crowd, and the Roman governor Pontius Pilate, ultimately leading to the tragedy of the crucifixion. Classic songs like "I Don't Know How to Love Him" and "Superstar" express the characters' inner struggles through rock rhythms, breaking the serious framework of traditional religious dramas and prompting the audience to rethink the meanings of sacrifice, betrayal, and redemption. This work is an early masterpiece by musical theatre maestro Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyricist Tim Rice, first released as a concept album in 1970 and premiering on Broadway in 1971, quickly becoming a classic rock opera. It subverts tradition with no spoken dialogue, advancing the story entirely through songs, and boldly modernises the story of Jesus, sparking significant controversy. This production, presented by GMG Productions (HK), is one of the rare stagings of this rock Bible musical in Hong Kong.
