About the show
"Thousand Reeds, One Universe" marks the grand launch of the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra's 50th anniversary and serves as the core chapter of the International Sheng and Reeds Festival 2026. This concert takes the "reed"—an ancient yet vibrant sound—as its thread, weaving a symphonic tapestry of sheng and reed instruments that spans regions and civilizations. The vibration of the reed is among the oldest and most universal expressions of breath in human musical history. From the robust tones of northern Shanxi vocal traditions to the archaic elegance of the Tang sheng preserved in Japan's Shosoin, from the mellifluous lusheng of the Guizhou and Guangxi mountains to the southern flair of Thai sheng, and even the fantastical improvisations of the Russian jaw harp, the concert presents a comprehensive lineage of reed instruments. Here, diverse civilizations, through a shared physical vibration, nurture artistic vocabularies rooted in their own lands yet echoing one another. In the final movement, "One Breath Across the Universe," the conductor will guide the audience to blend unamplified humming into the orchestral texture—the sheng is no longer merely an "object to be played," but becomes a medium connecting all breath. One reed, one world; a thousand sheng, one harmonious universe. This 50th season opening concert, performed by the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra, is a highlight of the Chinese Culture Festival 2026 and the Asia+ Festival 2026, and kicks off the International Sheng and Reeds Festival 2026. Ideal for audiences who love world music, cross-cultural dialogue, and innovative interpretations of traditional instruments, the concert offers a journey through the diverse facets of sheng and reeds, linking past and present, East and West, in a singular auditory experience.
