About the show

"Every one of us in this generation seems to be trapped by circumstance, each with our own bitter tale..." Does anyone still keep a diary? Yes. A diary known as "The Diary of Song" has been circulating on the streets, said to be written by a man named Song, who "wields both pen and sword," recording the minutiae of life from a unique perspective—taking down tigers and swatting flies alike, every page steeped in blood and sweat. Yet, he loses his job, sells sesame cakes, and witnesses life's absurdities. And yet, he still has dreams, poetry, and a distant desert horizon. Produced by the Hong Kong Repertory Theatre (香港話劇團), "The Diary of Song 2026" uses the pen of a modern grassroots hero to reopen those tales of helpless bitterness, allowing audiences to witness, amid the interplay of the martial world and everyday life, how one person can still retain a poetic escape in the midst of despair. Premiering in 2017, "The Diary of Song" was immediately awarded Best Script and Outstanding Production of the Year at the 27th Hong Kong Drama Awards. Since 2022, it has been screened as a video recording in multiple cities, quietly becoming a little secret among theatre enthusiasts. This new version, revived a decade later, is led by playwright Poon Wai-sum (潘惠森), who assembles a motley crew of talents, paired with a fresh score by Chan Wai-fat (陳偉發), leaving the heroes of Liangshan unable to advance or retreat—every word and punch lands with a rhythmic impact. This walking, talking new classic of a diary is set to weave even deeper layers of heroic passion and absurdity on stage.
