About the show
"The Mad Phoenix" traces the life of legendary Hong Kong screenwriter Jiang Yuliu (stage name: Nanhai Shisanlang), telling his tragic story from a brilliant Cantonese opera talent at the height of his fame to a destitute, mentally unstable man wandering the streets in his later years. Through his interactions with his disciple Tang Disheng and his father Jiang Kongyin, as well as reflections on the changing times, the play portrays a genius's struggle and perseverance in a chaotic era. Blending humour and sorrow, it explores timeless themes of art, fate, and humanity, cementing its status as a classic of Hong Kong theatre. Originally a stage work written by To Kwok-wai (杜國威) and directed by Ko Chi-sum (高志森) in 1993, the play was inspired by the real-life story of Nanhai Shisanlang. It received widespread acclaim upon its premiere and has been revived multiple times, becoming a milestone in Hong Kong drama. A film adaptation in 1997 further solidified its cultural significance. This production is presented by Spring-Time Experimental Theatre (春天實驗劇團) as part of the Tuen Mun Town Hall Venue Partnership Scheme, continuing the legacy and impact of this iconic work.
