Opera: Mascagni’s Cavalleria Rusticana & Leoncavallo’s Pagliacci (歌劇：馬斯卡尼《鄉村騎士》與列卡華洛《丑角》) Cavalleria Rusticana and Pagliacci are the most famous "twin operas" in Italian operatic history, frequently performed together on the same bill. The former tells a tragedy of jealousy and betrayal in a Sicilian village: on Easter morning, the young peasant Turiddu rekindles an affair with his former lover Lola, enraging her husband Alfio, and is ultimately killed in a duel. The latter uses a "play within a play" device to depict the love and jealousy of a travelling clown troupe — the troupe leader Canio plays a betrayed husband on stage, only to discover that his wife Nedda is actually having an affair with a villager, and ultimately stabs them both with a real knife on stage. Both operas are renowned for their intense emotional outbursts, moving arias (such as Pagliacci's "Vesti la giubba"), and gripping finales, showcasing the raw power of Italian verismo opera. Cavalleria Rusticana, composed by Mascagni (馬斯卡尼), premiered in Rome in 1890 to great success, and its intermezzo has become a classical music staple; Pagliacci, created by Leoncavallo (列卡華洛), premiered in Milan in 1892 and is hailed as a masterpiece of verismo opera. Since the early 20th century, the two have often been staged together, forming the traditional "Cav & Pag" double bill. This production is presented by Opera Hong Kong (香港歌劇院), bringing together international singers and a local orchestra for a full performance at the Grand Theatre of the Hong Kong Cultural Centre (香港文化中心大劇院).
