In 1977, Andrew Lloyd Webber created the musical *Cats* based on T.S. Eliot's poetry collection, premiering at the New London Theatre in London's West End in 1981, followed by its Broadway debut at the Winter Garden Theatre in New York in 1982. At the annual Jellicle Ball, all the Jellicle cats gather together; on this special night, their wisest and most benevolent elder, Old Deuteronomy, selects one cat deemed most worthy to be reborn into a new Jellicle life. One by one, the cats take the stage to share their life stories, hoping to be chosen for this rebirth. Since its 1981 premiere, *Cats* has toured to over 54 countries, been translated into more than 23 languages, and been seen by over 77 million people.
