About the show

The concubine of Grand Chancellor Jia Sidao (賈似道), Li Huiniang (李慧娘), encounters the Imperial College student Pei Yu (裴禹) at West Lake. Forced to reject his advances as a government official's concubine, Huiniang has secretly fallen for him; as she gazes at Pei's retreating figure, she cannot help but exclaim, "What a handsome youth!" Enraged upon hearing this, Jia kills Huiniang and conceals her coffin in the Red Plum Pavilion. Later, Pei Yu meets Lu Zhaorong (盧昭容), who lives in Embroidery Valley, and is struck by her striking resemblance to Huiniang, falling in love at once. Jia, also drawn to Zhaorong's likeness to Huiniang, seeks to take her as his concubine, setting off a tangled web of love, resentment, and the bond between the living and the dead. Produced by Li Ho-yin (李浩賢) and presented by the Hong Kong Cantonese Opera Troupe (香港粵劇藝術團), *The Reincarnation of the Red Plum* is a classic masterpiece by Tong Tik-sang (唐滌生). This production is led by veteran Cantonese opera star Lung Koon-tin (龍貫天), alongside accomplished performers Wong Shing-bun (黃成彬), Hiu Yu (曉瑜), Ng Man-ting (吳敏婷), and Liu Kwok-sum (廖國森). The drama features both the impassioned scene of Huiniang's ghost confronting Jia and the fantastical ending of her returning to life through another's body to marry Pei. With its twists and turns, the performance showcases the full charm of Cantonese opera's singing, acting, and martial arts. It is ideal for audiences who cherish traditional Cantonese opera and enjoy intricate love stories.
