About the show
"Returning in Triumph to Greet the Phoenix" is a tale of competing for a bride, where a brash marshal wins a lady's heart with his bare hands; a battle of wits and alliances, where a clever princess outsmarts heroes with her ingenious schemes. This play is a Cantonese opera version of a multi-layered "Taming of the Shrew." The proud and self-assured Marshal Gai Shiying of Cai, with his extraordinary bearing and eloquence, instantly conquers the aloof and haughty Princess Caifeng of Song. Yet, the princess soon unleashes a series of clever wifely tactics, managing his affairs inside and out and resolving his troubles, ultimately turning the hardest steel into a tender coil. The rejected princes of Han and Zhao join forces to attack Cai, and Shiying, overconfident in victory, is defeated and flees in disarray. Caifeng disguises herself as a ferrywoman, feigning a boat ride to tease and rescue her husband, and on the battlefield, she cunningly outwits Han Wudi, joining Shiying to subdue all heroes with wit and martial skill. The play incorporates traditional set pieces such as the "Fake Ferry Crossing," with each scene featuring its own thematic flair and a rich array of performance routines. "The White Dragon Pass" is set against the backdrop of the late Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period, highlighting the forbidden romance between Bai Long, the prince of Northern Han, and Song general Huyan Jinding, a tale filled with twists. Outside the White Dragon Pass, heavy encirclement cannot confine the fleeting glimpse of spring; atop Flying Dragon Ridge, surging killing intent cannot quell the wild drumbeats of budding love! Song general Huyan Shouting and his sister Jinding are ordered to disguise themselves as village maidens to smuggle the military tally through the pass to seek reinforcements. Bai Long and Jinding fall in love at first sight, their feelings mutual—can Jinding pass through successfully? Faced with her beloved, how will Jinding choose? This play maste
