About the show

The acclaimed "Cantonese Opera Tea House Experience (粵・樂・茶韻)", artistically planned and directed by Cantonese opera star Law Kar-ying (羅家英), leads the Tea House Rising Stars Troupe (茶館新星劇團) in delivering a refined 90-minute experience. The programme features selected opera excerpts, Cantonese opera singing, and instrumental music, complemented by lively narration, allowing you to savour tea and dim sum in a theatre designed to evoke a traditional Chinese tea house. This season, alongside Law Kar-ying (羅家英)'s signature pieces, new excerpts with distinct flavours have been added, including the beloved "Comforting the Wife (慰妻)" from "The Unreturned (胡不歸)", the newly adapted "Stealing the Herbs (盜草)" from "The Legend of White Snake (白蛇傳)" showcasing the performers' skills, and the tension-filled "Resolving Grievances (䆁嫌)" from "Mu Guiying Breaks Through Hongzhou (穆桂英大破洪州)", which tells of a martial couple mending their rift. The segments for "tune performance (牌子演奏)", "instrumental music (音樂演奏)", and "Cantonese opera singing (粵曲演唱)" have also added new pieces. The programme is rich and varied, with different operas and pieces selected for each performance, ensuring a fresh surprise with every visit. Produced by the West Kowloon Cultural District (西九文化區), "Cantonese Opera Tea House Experience (粵・樂・茶韻)" is an essential introductory experience for visitors to the Xiqu Centre (戲曲中心). Producer Chung Chun-chun (鍾珍珍) emphasises that no extensive cultural or artistic knowledge is required; everyone is welcome to step into the world of Cantonese opera at any time. Principal performers include Wong Hei-wing (王希頴), Man Suet-kau (文雪裘), To Wing-sum (杜詠心), Chan Kai-ting (陳紀婷), and Chan Hei-yu (陳禧瑜). Under the guidance of Law Kar-ying (羅家英), they will take turns performing the opera excerpts and pieces in a flexible cast, allowing the audience to experience the essence and warmth of Cantonese opera within 90 minutes.
