Refined Cantonese opera highlights paired with fragrant tea and delicate dim sum — this is an unmissable experience for anyone visiting Xiqu Centre. The acclaimed "Cantonese Opera · Music · Tea" programme, curated and directed by renowned Cantonese opera star Law Kar-ying (羅家英), sees him lead the Tea House New Stars Troupe in a 90-minute showcase of精选 excerpts, opera singing, and instrumental music, all accompanied by lively introductions. This season continues to feature Law's signature works while adding a diverse range of excerpts, including the beloved "Comforting the Wife" from "The Unreturning" (胡不歸), the newly-choreographed "Stealing the Herb" from "The Legend of White Snake" (白蛇傳) showcasing the performers' skills, and the tension-filled "Resolving Grievances" from "Mu Guiying Breaks the Hongzhou Formation" (穆桂英大破洪州), which depicts a martial couple mending their rift. With a rich and varied programme that rotates different plays and tunes each performance, every visit promises a fresh surprise. "A 90-minute introductory performance to Cantonese opera, featuring a rotating line-up of classic arias, excerpts, and instrumental pieces, complemented by accessible narration; no prior cultural or artistic knowledge is needed — you're welcome to drop by anytime and step into the world of opera," says producer Chung Chun-chun (鍾珍珍). Set in a theatre designed to evoke a traditional Chinese teahouse, audiences can savour tea and snacks while enjoying the show. This September's performances feature members of the Tea House New Stars Troupe, including Wong Hei-wing (王希頴), Man Suet-kau (文雪裘), To Wing-sum (杜詠心), Chan Kai-ting (陳紀婷), and Chan Hei-yu (陳禧瑜), with new pieces added to the "Pai Zi Ensemble," "Instrumental Music," and "Cantonese Opera Singing" segments, weaving together tradition and innovation for a novel operatic journey each time.
