About the show
"The Legend of Nanhai Shisanlang" follows the life of Hong Kong's legendary screenwriter Jiang Yuliu (stage name Nanhai Shisanlang), tracing his tragic arc from a celebrated genius in the Cantonese opera world to a destitute, mentally unstable figure on the streets in his later years. Through his interactions with his disciple Tang Disheng and his father Jiang Kongyin, alongside reflections on shifting times, the play portrays a prodigy's struggle and perseverance amid turbulent eras. Blending humour with melancholy, it probes timeless themes of art, fate, and humanity, standing as a classic of Hong Kong theatre. Originally staged in 1993, written by To Kwok-wai and directed by Ko Chi-sum (高志森), the work draws inspiration from the real-life figure Nanhai Shisanlang. Its premiere earned widespread acclaim, leading to numerous revivals and cementing its status as a milestone in Hong Kong drama. A 1997 film adaptation further solidified its cultural legacy. This production, presented by Spring-Time Experimental Theatre (春天實驗劇團) as part of the Tuen Mun Town Hall Venue Partnership Scheme, continues the play's enduring heritage and influence.
