About the show

After work, fancy a drink and some brain food? Why not both? Lecture After Dark brings the popular bar-lecture culture from overseas to Hong Kong, allowing participants to learn new things and reflect on important topics in a relaxed setting. This time's topic: "Does Hong Kong Have Hip Hop? Re-examining Local Culture Through Hong Kong Hip Hop." When it comes to Hong Kong hip hop—think acts like The Low Mays, Fama (農夫), TomFatKi, 24 Herbs (廿四味), LMF, and others—the public often associates it with labels like "unserious," "rebellious," or "non-mainstream." Yet these seemingly negative traits are actually shaped by specific historical and cultural developments, giving Hong Kong hip hop its unique character today. This lecture will approach the subject from aesthetic, cultural, historical, and musical angles, rethinking the trajectory and cultural significance of local Hong Kong hip hop—though it may seem to form its own circle in Hong Kong's music history, it paradoxically reveals a cultural expression closest to Hong Kong itself: an authentic, natural, unvarnished local voice. The speaker is Dr. Kenrick Ho (何家祺博士), a composer and music researcher based in Hong Kong. He earned his PhD from the University of Leeds (英國利茲大學) in 2024, taught at the University of Plymouth (普列茅斯大學) after graduation, and now works in music curation and creation in Hong Kong. This lecture is perfect for anyone interested in local pop culture, music, and identity—come get a little tipsy and rediscover Hong Kong's sound.
