About the show

"Return to Fate (還緣)" centres on Dunhuang culture, merging contemporary art and musical composition to reveal what is missing from Dunhuang culture in a modern context and to restore it. This is a cross-media performance curated by Hong Kong Tianlai Dunhuang Ensemble (香港天籟敦煌樂團), structured into four chapters: "Returning Appearances (還相)", "Returning Sounds (還音)", "Returning People (還人)", and "Returning Fate (還緣)". New media artists and composers collaborate, with musicians performing live, using art and music to reconstruct the cultural significance of Dunhuang, inviting audiences to explore the forgotten stories and souls behind the thousand-year-old grottoes amidst a tapestry of sound and imagery. Led by Hong Kong Tianlai Dunhuang Ensemble (香港天籟敦煌樂團), the production brings together multiple new media artists and composers, with musicians performing original scores live. It blends contemporary media technology to evoke the imagery of Dunhuang murals and sutra illustrations. More than a concert, this work is a cross-media experiment in cultural restoration, suited for audiences interested in Dunhuang art, cross-disciplinary creation, and the dialogue between tradition and modernity.
