A group of golden-age friends from Guangzhou open the dusty pages of their past, recalling the kindness shown by relatives and friends in Hong Kong during their hardscrabble years. As times change, they strive alongside their loved ones, building a life through difficult entrepreneurship. Time slips by, and their partners depart first. Entering their twilight years, it is as if they hold a scale of time in their hands—one side weighing memories and longing, the other living fully in the present. Slowly, they find balance between gain and loss, parting and daily routine—unburdened by the past, unafraid to walk alone, living out the brilliance and radiance that belongs to their golden years with quiet composure. *The Scale* is produced by Arts' Options, and is one of the performances in the 2nd Hong Kong Golden Age Arts Festival, starring Choi Sou-kwan (蔡述群). Centring on golden-age elders, the play likens the later stage of life to a scale that requires constant adjustment—the weight of the past and the lightness of the present, the wistfulness of farewell and the warmth of everyday moments, all weighed repeatedly across the passage of time.
