About the show

Cha Duk Chang Children's Cantonese Opera Association (查篤撐兒童粵劇協會) presents a large-scale original children's Cantonese opera, "Why Why The Grand Assembly" (點解點解大封相). Inspired by the classic Cantonese opera "The Grand Assembly of the Six States" (六國大封相), this production infuses childlike wonder and fantastical elements, making it perfect for the whole family. The story follows a small opera troupe as they rehearse, only to encounter one obstacle after another. Even the Jade Emperor and Hua Guang (華光) step in to help, but one crucial element remains missing — can the timid Siu-ng (小五) muster the courage to step onto the stage? The Jade Emperor regrets burning down the theatre shed, so Hua Guang manifests to avert disaster, summoning celestial beings to aid the troupe: the Weaver Girl (織女) tailors costumes, Lu Ban (魯班) builds the set, and Han Xiang (韓湘) composes a tune with six reversed notes in the gong-che scale. Everything is ready except for the east wind... Siu-ng, slow-witted and fearful of the stage, now needs the audience's support — give him a cheer, a cheer! Performed entirely in Cantonese with traditional Chinese subtitles, the show runs approximately 2.5 hours, inviting audiences to experience the magic of traditional Cantonese opera both onstage and behind the scenes through laughter and heartfelt moments.
