About the show

Born in 1986, Stan Lai (賴聲川)’s *Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land* celebrates its 40th anniversary in 2026. Have you ever imagined a single night where two theatre troupes, fighting for rehearsal space, are forced to rehearse on the same stage? On one side is the modern tragedy “Secret Love”: Jiang Binliu and Yun Zhifan fall in love in Shanghai during wartime, only to be separated by chaos. They each end up in Taiwan, unaware of each other’s whereabouts, pining for forty years until a missing person ad reunites them in a hospital — but time has changed everything. On the other side is the ancient comedy “Peach Blossom Land”: fisherman Old Tao discovers his wife Chunhua is having an affair with Boss Yuan. In a rage, he stumbles into a paradise, where he meets immortals who look exactly like the adulterous couple. When he returns, over a decade has passed, and Chunhua and Boss Yuan’s marriage is still a chaotic mess. When the tears of tragedy and the laughter of comedy are placed side by side on the same stage, the audience, caught in a swirl of emotions, steps into a state of “self-forgetfulness” — this is the wisdom Stan Lai (賴聲川) drew from ancient Greek theatre and Japanese Noh: tragedy and comedy are two sides of the same coin, creating what *The New York Times* called “a classic of contemporary Chinese theatre.” The inspiration for *Secret Love in Peach Blossom Land* came from a real-life farce in 1980s Taiwanese theatre: director Chen Yuhui (陳玉慧)’s rehearsal was disrupted by a kindergarten graduation ceremony, and the unmanaged chaos showed Stan Lai (賴聲川) the disorder of an entire era. Created by Stan Lai (賴聲川) and the Performance Workshop (表演工作坊), this play has been performed by over 15 generations of actors — including Jin Shijie (金士傑), Brigitte Lin (林青霞), Huang Lei (黃磊), Sun Li (孫莉), Yuan Quan (袁泉), and He Jiong (何炅) — across mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and overseas for four decades. For the 40th anniversary in 2026, the Shanghai Theatre Troupe (上劇團),
