When quantifiers are swapped, what gets set in motion is not just the imagination of language, but the possibilities of life itself. En-en and Black Cat Whiskers sit in a cha chaan teng, counting the things on the street: "Can we say 'a tree of lemon tea'? A pair of Popeye?" Following little ant Ah Sai's footsteps: "Can we say 'a meal of soda float'? An acre of Horlicks?" Are the timber shops and hardware stores on Poetry and Song Street playing percussion with their screws? Fa Yuen Street has no garden, and Jordan Valley isn't in Jordan; the stalls that go up at dawn and come down at dusk fold day and night together, overlapping the old ladies' shirts with the dai pai dong in place. Xi Xi's literature breaks through fixed forms, inviting us to reopen our curious eyes, to re-observe our city from the perspectives of small figures—children, street cats, and ants—riding on whimsy to step into future possibilities: you can love this city in countless ways, and in an imperfect world, see your own universe. The Hong Kong Children's Musical Theatre has adapted Xi Xi's poetry picture book into a musical, enlisting Ng Cheuk-yin (伍卓賢), winner of the 2024 Hong Kong Drama Awards' "Best Original Music (Musical)," as music director; lyricist Cheung Cho-kiu (張楚翹), recipient of the CASH Golden Sail Award for Most Performed Digital Songs; choreographer Ma Sze-nga (馬師雅), winner of the 2021 Hong Kong Arts Development Awards' "Young Artist Award"; and director Chan Hung-keung (陳港虹), a founding member of Fiesta Space's Affis Theatre. The troupe continues to promote sign language songs, with deaf sisters Yu On-lam (余安琳) and Yu Wai-lam (余煒琳), sign language instructors from the Hong Kong sign language preservation organisation "Deaf Star," personally teaching the young performers, weaving language and imagination into a unique tapestry on stage.
