Following last year's heartwarming success of "Ah Neoi Returns Home" (阿囡返歸), the 2026 Yu Lan Cultural Festival's "Untying the Bell" series presents its second instalment, "Crossing the Sea, Crossing Lives" (渡海·渡人). Set in the 1960s at the triangular pier of Sheung Wan, a newly arrived Teochew coolie named Mang Mong-hoi (蔡浩洋飾) would always vanish silently into the street corner after work each day, his face expressionless. A probing question from Ng Sang (杜施聰飾), the head of the coolie lodge, unravels the secret buried in his heart—he has come to Hong Kong alone, searching through the vast crowd for his sworn brother Cheung Ching-ching (林泳怡飾), who stood by him through life-and-death trials but lost contact amid the chaos of turbulent times. This journey of letting go and remembrance awaits your witness under the theatre tent! Produced by the Hong Kong Federation of Teochew Community Organisations Charitable Fund, this play continues the interactive theatre format, taking you through the dust of time to trace the origins of the Teochew Yu Lan Festival in Hong Kong, and to feel the human bonds hidden beneath festive customs. Performed in Cantonese with English subtitles, the programme runs approximately forty-five minutes with no intermission, suitable for audiences aged six and above. Principal cast members include To Si-chung (杜施聰), Lam Wing-yi (林泳怡), Choi Ho-yeung (蔡浩洋), and Ng Kwan-hei (吳均熙), presenting this cross-generational encounter under the theatre tent during the Yu Lan Festival period.
