About the show
Whether it is the classical literary masterpiece *Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio* or the 1980s supernatural romance classic *A Chinese Ghost Story* produced by Tsui Hark, the undying love between Nie Xiaoqian and Ning Caichen has moved audiences and lingered in their hearts. As 2027 marks the fortieth anniversary of the release of the Hong Kong classic film *A Chinese Ghost Story*, the grand dance drama *The Legend of the Purple Hairpin* will return for its fourth run. At this significant moment, the production pays a heartfelt tribute through stage art to our beloved "Gor Gor"—the legendary singer and actor Leslie Cheung (張國榮). The dance drama weaves tender and lingering choreographic language with the visual aesthetics of contemporary art and technology, accompanied by soul-stirring melodies and interwoven with Leslie Cheung's haunting vocals, reawakening that love story that transcends life and death. Love and affection, goodness and courage—"In the mortal world, how many directions do beautiful dreams take? Seeking the beloved in my foolish fantasies, the road fades into the mist"—turning the classic into an eternal collective memory and creating an immortal theatrical spectacle. The Hong Kong Dance Company's 2026/27 season grand dance drama *The Legend of the Purple Hairpin* is performed by the company's elite dancers, reshaping this stirring obsession through pure physical expression. Rooted in a dance aesthetic that blends tradition and contemporaneity, and enhanced by multimedia stage technology, the production immerses audiences in the ethereal realm where the living and the dead part ways. Familiar melodies and Leslie Cheung's voice resonate through the theatre, adding a thrill that transcends time and space. This tale of devotion, courage, and freedom—whether for devoted fans revisiting the classic or first-time audiences—allows viewers to feel, through every gesture of the dancers, a depth of love and romance that surpasses life and death.
