Eileen Chang is a singularly legendary writer in the history of twentieth-century Chinese modern literature, who spent her life casting a cold eye on profound emotion, capturing with delicate brushstrokes the breathtaking moments within ordinary hearts. The dance theatre piece *Ten Colours, One Dream* — Phantoms of Life in Eileen Chang's Prose centres on Chang's first collection of short stories, *Legends*, weaving tales of memory, illusion, and moonlight that are reborn on stage through fluid bodily vocabulary and multi-layered visual design. Ten spaces, ten lives, ten fleeting destinies — the green of the hillside, the sea of Repulse Bay, the ringing of the tram, Chang's Hong Kong brims with stark contrasts of colour, where splendour and desolation intertwine, contradictory yet captivating, now transformed into graceful dance shadows that probe her unique soul and imagination. Hong Kong Dance Company has invited guest choreographer Xie Yin (謝茵) to craft this work, stepping into Eileen Chang's literary world through contemporary dance vocabulary. Marking the thirtieth anniversary of Hong Kong's return to China, the company forges a new original piece that distils the city's cultural imagery, turning literature into dance shadows, inaugurating and extending a new chapter in Hong Kong's cultural classics. This multifaceted, fluid city — where tradition and modernity overlap, East and West converse, and survival and desire interweave — deeply infused her creative foundations, and now comes alive anew on stage.
