Prince Siegfried, on the eve of his coming-of-age birthday, is admonished by the Queen Mother to shoulder royal duties and choose a bride at the ball. He mourns the freedom he is about to lose and frets over not yet meeting a kindred spirit. At dusk, he follows the trail of swans into the depths of a forest, arriving at a moonlit lake—only to discover it is the domain of an evil sorcerer, where maidens have been transformed into swans by a curse. He witnesses a swan revert into the beautiful Odette, the Swan Queen, who explains that the spell turns them into swans by day and maidens by night, and only a man who has never loved and swears eternal fidelity to her can break the curse. The Prince offers his heart without hesitation, but as dawn approaches, the sorcerer seizes Odette away. In Act II, the Prince remains indifferent to his prospective brides at the ball, yet is bewitched by the sorcerer’s disguised knight and Odile, who bears a striking resemblance to Odette. Mistaking her for his true love, he pledges his loyalty—only to realise too late that he has been deceived. In Act III, he braves the storm conjured by the sorcerer to seek Odette’s forgiveness, but death becomes the only path to salvation. The lake waters unite the lovers for eternity, the sorcerer’s power is destroyed, and in the distance, the vision of the two ascending toward everlasting love emerges.
