About the show

The critically acclaimed "Cantonese Opera Tea House Experience (粵・樂・茶韻)" is back, with Cantonese opera star Law Kar-ying (羅家英) serving as artistic director and curator. He personally leads the Tea House Rising Star Troupe (茶館新星劇團) in presenting an approximately 90-minute programme of carefully selected opera excerpts, Cantonese songs, and instrumental music, complemented by lively guided commentary. While enjoying the performances, audiences can also savour tea and dim sum in a theatre designed to resemble a traditional Chinese tea house. This season, in addition to continuing Law Kar-ying's signature works, the programme introduces several new excerpts with distinct flavours, including the beloved "Comforting the Wife" from "Why Not Return (胡不歸)", the newly choreographed "Stealing the Herbs" from "The Legend of White Snake (白蛇傳)" showcasing the performers' skills, and the tension-filled "Resolving Resentment" from "Mu Guiying Breaks the Hongzhou Fortress (穆桂英大破洪州)", which tells the story of a general and his wife mending their rift. Meanwhile, other segments such as "Pai-tse (牌子) Performance", "Instrumental Music", and "Cantonese Song Singing" have also added new pieces, ensuring fresh surprises with every visit. This is the West Kowloon Cultural District's Tea House Theatre's "90-minute Introductory Chinese Opera Performance", presented by the Tea House Rising Star Troupe led by Law Kar-ying (羅家英). The programme features classic Cantonese songs, opera excerpts, and instrumental music, performed on a rotating basis with accessible guided explanations. No prior cultural or artistic knowledge is needed—you are welcome to drop in anytime and step into the world of Chinese opera. With rich and varied content, each performance selects different plays and pieces, allowing you to enjoy tea and opera in a traditional tea house atmosphere and experience the diverse charm of Cantonese opera.
